A view on condemning others by Tomlyn E. Speir

The following was a small "shout out" that I wrote in my weblog (or blog) on Feb. 20th, 2004 about current events (and one not-so current event). These views are strictly my own and in no way reflect those of organizations like Horse of the Americas, Inc. If you have anything you'd like to say about this piece, please e-mail me at russianbluecat@yahoo.com Thanks!
People are crazy. End of story. I mean, we have to protest, argue, and resist every damn little thing that comes down the river; every little thing that doesn't go just the way we wanted it to go. Why? Because we're spoiled little brats at heart, I guess. Cases in point...
Case 1: An animal professional takes his infant son to work and feeds a
large, deadly animal with said son in his arms, and people go apeshit because
that just can't possibly be safe. Never mind the fact that he does this
for a living, and knows what he's doing at all times.
Case 2: A movie based on a western story and advertised as "based as true
story" gets slammed because people don't like the fact that it quite possibly is, even though there's little proof of it (but then again, how and when did
Jesse James die? What really happened at the OK Corral? Funny, all of these
stories that there's no real proof of, and yet the one everyone throws a fit
about is the one where the cowboy on his American horse beats Arabs on their
Arabians on their own dessert).
Case 3: A woman who has a family of strangely mutated cats that are beloved
of the family is compared to Hitler and other villains, both historical and
fictional, because they're a bit different, so it it simply must be
cruel. Never mind that she's a former Animal Control officer and an expert on
Animal Cruelty.
Case 4: Two famous pop artists, one female and one male, manage to display
the woman's nipple on network television. So, of course, they are both going to
Hell, and should be ashamed of themselves, and God only knows how many small,
innocent children will be scared for life from the sight. Never mind the fact
that the very same body part is partly responsible for the same child's existence, or that every woman (nay--every mammal, males included) has that
very same body part somewhere.
I mean, come on, people...Freedom of speech is one thing, but is it really too much to ask to think things through before yelling and screaming things like cruelty and fraud? Apparently so. After all, it is so much more fun to shoot first and ask questions later, isn't it?! Now, if you will excuse me, I have a cross burning to attend before I meet up with some friends to lynch a gay man.
Freedom of Speech--The right to say the things you want to say, and to say the things others may not want to hear.
